From Nov 18-22 at KTH in Stockholm, we are organizing a FLOW school on the topic of “Fluids & Surfaces”.
This school offers early-career researchers (PhD students, postdocs, researchers, etc) a comprehensive, in-depth course on fluid-surface interactions. While the primary audience is those with a background in fluid mechanics, applicants from diverse fields are welcome.
Topics:
Part 1 (Theory): Introduction to interfaces, surface-tension-driven flows, transport across interfaces, interface rheology, wetting, impregnation, textured surfaces, dynamics of interfaces, interfacial instabilities.
Part 2 (Experimental techniques): Preparation/characterisation of complex surfaces, atomic force microscopy imaging, force measurements, techniques for measuring slippage.
Part 3 (Numerical techniques): Surface thermodynamics, derivation of the Cahn-Hilliard and van der Waals equations, and numerical methods using the phase field and volume of fluid methods. Special focus on solid surfaces and contact lines.
Lecturers:
Prof. David Quéré, ESPCI Paris & École polytechnique, France
Prof. Chiara Neto, University of Sydney, Australia
Prof. Stéphane Zaleski, Institut Jean Le Rond d’Alembert, Sorbonne Université, France
Prof. Gustav Amberg, Södertörn University, Sweden
Prof. Shervin Bagheri, Royal institute of technology (KTH), Sweden
Dr. Théo Lenavetier, Royal institute of technology (KTH), Sweden
A detailed schedule with locations, times, and materials will be provided a few weeks before the course starts at www.flow.kth.se. The course is free of charge for admitted students and includes lunch, beverages, and snacks.
